In an attempt to reduce the number of vehicles on the road and encourage children to cycle to school the government

has available a capital grant system.

Every school in England is eligible for funding of cycle shelters, canopies and parent waiting shelters.

Primary schools can receive up to £ 3750.00 and Secondary schools up to £ 5000.00.

 

Application for funding

 

Schools need to have a travel plan in place in order to be awarded a grant.

The school travel plans must meet a number of criteria and based on this your local authority will assess your eligibility

to qualify for funding.

As a brief guideline your school travel plan should contain the following information :

 

Introduction

 

School name, address, number of pupils

Type of school

Age range of pupils

Description of the schools location and local community

DfES number

Number of staff

School opening times

 

School Statement

 

Why are you setting up a travel plan

Travel issues raised as a result of your surveys

Travel needs of others eg. staff, community members

Are there any clubs / activities outside school opening hours

 

Survey

 

Date of survey

Number of respondents

Survey example

Current methods of transport

Information on those using public transport

 

Action Plan

 

A list of objectives that will be achieved from your travel plan eg. reducing congestion at peak times

 

Monitoring

 

Your plan will need to include dates of when you will be reviewing and updating your school travel plan

     via carrying out a student survey

 

     Please note your local council employ a number of school travel plan advisors who are there to assist

     with your application.

     Your local travel plan advisor can be contacted through your local council or via Sustrans

 

     Sustran's is the UK's leading sustainable transport charity with their objective being reduction of cars

     on the road, encouraging walking and increasing the use of bikes and public transport.

 

     The Sustrans website provide a wide range of useful resources such as key stats, downloadable fact sheets

     and general guidance with your travel plan application

 

     The Department of Transport website also contains a wide range of information designed for, local authorities

     schools, teachers and parents.
